Middlesex: A Novel

Jeffrey Eugenides

I finally managed to finish Middlesex last night.  There was awhile there where I thought it would never happen, but it only took 2 long months of barely finding time to read it to do so.  I really enjoyed this book.  I'm not sure what to say about it other than it is amazing and everyone should read it – although most of you have.  I also recommend reading a book that takes place in a place you've lived – it was really interesting to see Southeastern Michigan through Cal/Callie's eyes.  And San Francisco, too.

I also enjoyed this one.  I read it for the law school book club and after our discussion I liked it even more.  It takes place in 1950s Vietnam but it is incredibly applicable today – in its criticism of American foreign policy and cultural globalization.  This is my second Greene and I can't wait to read more.

Hamlet (Signet Classics)

William Shakespeare

I read Hamlet for class.  I read it in high school, but that was quite a few years ago so I was glad for the opportunity to read it again.

And now I am reading Water for Elephants.  I've heard such good things that my hopes are extremely high for this one.  Hopefully I can finish it in a little more reasonable time period than Middlesex.

  1. I also took ages to get into Middlesex, ie, about 12m between starting and finishing it! Kind of felt it was like two completely different novels in one, ie, the part in Turkey and the part in the US. Enjoyed both but for different reasons.
