The Host: A Novel

Stephenie Meyer

I finally finished a book in a month that should have been full of finished books.  I read The Host by Stephanie Meyer.  It was no Twilight – nowhere near as good – but it was still very enjoyable and interesting.  The premise is usually something that would not interest me.  Aliens taking over the planet by taking over all human bodies is not something that I would usually read.  The fact that Stephanie Meyer wrote it and I am in love with the Twilight series is the only reason I did.  But it turned out to be pretty interesting.  It some interesting philosophies in it.  The aliens are peaceful and they look at humans as these wonderfully intelligent and emotional creatures but that they are also these horribly cruel creatures who needlessly kill their own.  So the question is: do you need the bad to have the good?  Does our inhumanity come with our humanity?

If you like Twilight, don't expect this to be the same.  But give it a shot.

I know what you mean about having a month that should have been full of finished books. I've been having one just like that, but I started Water for Elephants and that is shaping up to be a pretty good book so far. I have The Host on my summer TBR list, so it's good to hear that you actually liked it. I was planning on going into it with no Twilight-esque expectations of it, since I absolutely love Twilight, and it probably wouldn't be fair to compare the two.

My month is a disaster reading-wise! I had plans to read a lot of books but I seem to be stuck with three half-read books and not really feeling like reading any of them…
The Host sounds interesting enough although I rarely read books with similar subjects…

I really liked Water for Elephants. It's probably a good pick to get you through a slump.I figured The Host couldn't be as good as Twilight and I think that was a good expectation to have. I couldn't really figure out what made it adult though except that the main character is 21 instead of 17.

Yeah. I think Mansfield Park is what slowed me down. And a lot of TV-watching and no longer living by myself. You should give The Host a try if it sounds interesting. Have you read the Twilight series yet?

I really like WFE so far. It kinda reminds me of The Notebook, because Jacob reminisces like Noah did. I think it will help me with my reading slump too. It seems like a lot of the people on the book club are in a slump as well. That''s what I'm thinking too. I didn't really know why it was classified as adult either, but i guess the age thing makes it different.

No I haven't read Twilight, but I've heard a lot of bookclub people saying how much you all like it so it's on my ever-expanding TBR list… 🙂
